Look beyond the stereotype

Signs ADHD may be showing up

ADHD is not simply a matter of trying harder. It can affect attention, working memory, motivation, impulse control, and the ability to organize time and tasks. Some people notice these patterns earlier in life; others recognize them only when school, work, parenting, or a major life change makes old strategies stop working.

  • Starting tasks but struggling to finish them
  • Frequent forgetfulness, lost items, or missed details
  • Difficulty estimating time or managing competing priorities
  • Restlessness, impatience, or an always-on mind
  • Intense focus on interesting tasks and difficulty shifting
  • Emotional overwhelm after holding everything together

These experiences can also come from anxiety, depression, sleep problems, stress, learning differences, or physical health concerns. That is why an ADHD evaluation online should look at the whole picture rather than matching one symptom to one label.

The hidden workload matters

ADHD in adults and women

Many women and girls learn to compensate for ADHD by over-preparing, masking, people-pleasing, or building elaborate systems that take enormous energy to maintain. They may be described as capable or anxious while quietly struggling with missed deadlines, mental clutter, inconsistent routines, or the exhaustion that follows constant self-correction.

In adulthood, ADHD can become more visible when responsibilities multiply. Parenting, career changes, college, relationships, or a new demand for independent planning can expose difficulties that were previously supported by structure. Hormonal changes and sleep disruption may also affect how symptoms feel. Jessica Campbell, DNP, PMHNP-BC, FNP-BC, is a board-certified psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner who can help explore these patterns without reducing a person to them.

An evaluation does not assume ADHD is the answer. It makes space for your history, strengths, challenges, and the strategies that have helped or stopped helping.

A careful assessment

The ADHD evaluation process

An adult ADHD evaluation or teen evaluation begins with a detailed conversation about current concerns and how they developed over time. I will ask about attention, organization, impulsivity, activity level, emotional regulation, sleep, mood, anxiety, school or work, relationships, and daily functioning.

History and patterns

We look for patterns across settings and stages of life, including earlier-life experiences when available and relevant.

The full context

We consider other conditions, medical factors, stressors, strengths, and supports that may influence attention.

You may be invited to share school records, past evaluations, a partner or family member’s observations, or information from another clinician. This is not a test you can pass or fail. It is a collaborative process that helps us decide whether ADHD treatment is appropriate and what other care may be useful.

Tools that fit the person

ADHD treatment options

ADHD treatment can include medication management, supportive therapy, practical strategies, or a combination. There is no single plan that works for every brain or every season of life. We will talk about your goals, previous experiences, health history, schedule, and what feels realistic to maintain.

Medication management

When clinically appropriate, ADHD medication management includes discussing options, monitoring benefits and side effects, and making careful adjustments over time.

Supportive therapy

Focused support can help with routines, transitions, self-understanding, communication, and the emotional weight of years spent feeling behind.

Practical supports

We can identify small environmental changes, reminders, planning habits, and accommodations that make daily tasks more manageable.

A supportive first step

What to expect

Before an online ADHD treatment appointment, gather any medication list, prior testing, school or work concerns, and questions you want to remember. You can also simply bring the story of what has been hard. We will start there.

During follow-up, I will ask what you are noticing in daily life, not just whether you can concentrate in a quiet room. We can look at task completion, time management, sleep, appetite, mood, relationships, and the balance between benefits and burdens. Treatment can be refined as you learn more about what helps.

Whether you are seeking ADHD treatment for adults, care for a teen, or a thoughtful assessment of your own experience as a woman, you deserve to be met with curiosity and respect.

Questions are welcome

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a referral?

A referral is not always required, but your insurance plan may have its own rules. Contact Campbell Telehealth and check your benefits so we can confirm the best way to begin.

How soon can I be seen?

Availability changes. Reach out with your preferred timing and a little about what you need, and I will share the next available options when the practice is a suitable fit.

What happens during a psychiatric evaluation?

We discuss your current concerns, history, health, medications, daily functioning, goals, and safety. The evaluation helps us understand the full picture and consider appropriate next steps.

Can I get medication management without therapy?

Medication management may be considered without ongoing therapy when clinically appropriate. We will discuss your needs, preferences, and any other support that would make your care safer and more useful.
